Kelly Hall

Autoclaves

There are 2 autoclaves (Getinge 533LS model) available for use in Kelly Hall, located in rooms 238 and 338. Training must be provided by the ICTAS Lab Facilities Manager prior to use.

The Getinge 533LS autoclaves are stainless steel, self-generating steam models. The autoclaves are pre-programmed with gravity, liquid, and pre-vac cycles, including a cycle for waste.

Regulated Medical Waste is picked up by EHS from these locations every Monday morning (9:00-10:00AM). Supplies are provided (regulated medical waste cardboard boxes, liner bags, packaging tape, and stickers) for waste packaging. Sharps containers (7 gal., 3 gal., and 1 gal.) are provided, as well.

To report problems, order additional materials, or to obtain more information, please contact ictasbld@vt.edu.

Glassware Washers

There are two glassware washers (Lancer 1400LXP model) available for use in rooms 238 and 338 Kelly Hall.

The Lancer 1400LXP glassware washers are capable of high temperature washes and acid rinses. The glassware washers are pre-programmed with 4 factory cycles, but additional cycles can be added based upon research needs.

To report problems, request detergent or acid refills, or to obtain more information, please contact ictasbld@vt.edu.

RO Water

Labs located in Kelly Hall are provided with Reverse Osmosis (RO) water. RO water removes many types of molecules and ions from the water, generating water at ~15 MΩ/cm resistivity and <50 ppb total organic carbon (TOC). The RO water is generated centrally and is piped directly to each lab (look for separate faucets labeled RO around the sink area).

To report problems, or to obtain more information, please contact ictasbld@vt.edu.

Ultrapure Water Systems

Two ultrapure water systems are located in Kelly Hall, rooms 238 and 338. These Picopure® systems generate water at ~18 MΩ/cm resistivity and <10 ppb total organic carbon (TOC).

To request access, report problems, or to obtain more information, please contact ictasbld@vt.edu.

Air System

The labs in Kelly Hall are equipped with a BeaconMedaes house compressed air system. This system provides medical grade air to the lab benches. The air leaves the central system at a pressure of 90 psi. Pressure at the point of use may be lower depending on the distance traveled and the number of other air ports in operation.

To report problems, or to obtain more information, please contact ictasbld@vt.edu.

Vacuum System

The labs in Kelly Hall are equipped with a BeaconMedaes house vacuum system. The vacuum is pulled from a central system, so vacuum pressure at the point of use may be lower depending on the number of other vacuum ports in operation.

To report problems, or to obtain more information, please contact ictasbld@vt.edu.

ICTAS II

Autoclaves

There are 2 autoclaves (Steris Lab 250 model) available for use in ICTAS II, located in rooms 262 and 362. Training must be provided by the ICTAS Lab Facilities Manager prior to use.

The Steris autoclaves are stainless steel, self-generating steam models. The autoclaves are pre-programmed with gravity and liquid cycles, including a pre-vac waste cycle.

Glassware Washers

There are two glassware washers (Lancer 1400LXP model) available for use in rooms 262 and 362 ICTAS II.

DI Water

Labs located in ICTAS II are provided with Deionized (DI) water. DI water removes many types of molecules and ions from the water, generating water at ~16.5 MΩ/cm resistivity and <30 ppb total organic carbon (TOC). The DI water is generated centrally and is piped directly to each lab (look for separate faucets labeled DI around the sink area).

To report problems, or to obtain more information, please contact ictasbld@vt.edu.

Cold Rooms

ICTAS II is equipped with two cold rooms, located in rooms 266 and 366. These rooms are maintained at 4°C and have storage racks available for temperature sensitive materials. There is also bench space available for temperature controlled work.

To report problems, or to obtain more information, please contact ictasbld@vt.edu.

The labs in ICTAS II are equipped with a BeaconMedaes house compressed air system. This system provides medical grade air to the lab benches. The air leaves the central system at a pressure of 90 psi. Pressure at the point of use may be lower depending on the distance traveled and the number of other air ports in operation.

The labs in ICTAS II are equipped with a BeaconMedaes house vacuum system. The vacuum is pulled from a central system, so vacuum pressure at the point of use may be lower depending on the number of other vacuum ports in operation.

To report problems, or to obtain more information, please contact ictasbld@vt.edu.

Fume Hoods

Many labs in the ICTAS facilities are equipped with fume hoods. Fully functioning fume hoods should have an inward air flow and a face velocity reading between 80 and 120 cfm. When working inside the hood, the first 6 inches of space should be kept clear to ensure proper airflow.

The fume hood sash should be positioned such that maximum protection is provided. When not in use, sashes should be kept closed.

In the event of an emergency or significant chemical spill, the purge button on the fume hoods will maximize the amount of exhaust from the hood.

Biosafety Cabinets

Research involving biological agents (cell cultures, tissue cultures, etc.) require the use of biological safety cabinets (BSCs). These biosafety cabinets are intended to prevent exposure to potentially infectious agents.

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (and most funding agencies) requires biosafety cabinets to be certified annually. Virginia Tech has a contract with an external certification company. To arrange certification, a HokieMart requisition must be generated. Instructions can be found here.

Once the purchase order is generated, please contact ictasbld@vt.edu to schedule.
